A Commitment to Girls
"We do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals that deep inside us something is valuable, worth listening to,
worthy of our trust."
— e.e. cummings
The Intuitive Writing Project is a transformative arts program, a unique hybrid of creative writing class, group coaching, and personal development program. As young women and gender expansive youth write their stories and assert their voice, they discover who they are, who they want to become, and how to find their own answers.
Although I talk a lot about the principles of intuitive writing, intuitive leadership, and intuitive self-trust, I am not so much a teacher as I am a coach. My job is to be fully present, to listen and then "mirror back" the wisdom and power of each young woman, to support them in discovering their own greatness—and becoming the author and leader of their own life.
Unless a student agrees to have their work published on our blog, Intuitivevoice.org, they reserve the right to keep their writing private. When you enroll your child in the Intuitive Writing Project, you are entrusting them with their own personal development process. This process is unique for each writer, because each writer is unique, endowed with her own unique path and purpose.
I hope your child will share what they write with you. But we want everyone to feel safe to write about the things they aren't yet comfortable to share anywhere else. Because there's so much I can't share from the classroom, I want to share our commitment to your child, no matter what:
My Commitment:
1. I am committed to seeing the unique power and wholeness of each of young person, listening with empathy, respect, and unconditional support.
2. I am committed to respecting the wisdom and deep inner-knowing of each young person, to listen to their struggles without intervening, and to foster emotional resilience and problem solving—so everyone is empowered to find their own answers.
3. I am committed to giving each young writer the structure, stability and safe space they need to express themselves honestly. I do this by providing a relaxed, playful, and encouraging environment where everyone feels free to be their most authentic self, to listen to each other, care for each other, and declare what they know to be true.
4. I am committed to supporting each young person in the discovery of their own strengths, talents, passions, interests, and personal values.
5. I am committed to giving everyone the time and space to verbalize and “own” all their feelings and experiences, free from judgment, to express whatever comes up—sadness or anger or fear or excitement or everything at the same time—and know that whatever comes up is necessary, valid, and important. (It is through self-expression that we develop self-knowledge, and through self-knowledge that we develop self-trust.)

6. I am committed to deeply listening to, celebrating, and affirming the immeasurable inner life of each young person.
7. I am committed to modeling the same kindness and respect I expect from each young person, in how they regard both themselves and each other. Empathy (and self-empathy) is the only guideline. In this way, we work together to create and sustain a supportive community in which everyone is equally valued, validated, and encouraged.
Letter to a Young Woman
The title of this letter is inspired by the book, Letters to a Young Poet, by Rainer Maria Rilke, which I love, as well.
Dear You,

I remember how hard it was. I remember the pressure and the fear and the way I lost myself. It is because of you that I’ve launched The Intuitive Writing Project. It belongs to you. It belongs to all young women. It is for you to write and to speak and to express the things that have been building inside you for a million years. I want you to know how important you are, the indescribable importance of everything you think and feel and write and say. Now, more than ever, the world needs the wisdom of women, young and old together, all women together, declaring what we know to be true.

I also want you to know what it’s taken me a lifetime to learn, to know that you are brilliant and brave and can always trust yourself. I want you to know that everything you need is already inside you. I want you to know that your intuition is wisdom. And the next time you’re talking with friends about a decision, I hope you will remind each other of this, that you will ask: what’s your intuition say?

Most of all, I want you to know that your intuition will always tell the truth and that you will always be able to hear it—through your heart and your body and the words you write on paper.

With unconditional love,
